Beaty Construction was the prime contractor on the Monon Trail over 38th Street project, which is facilitated through INDOT for the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works. This project is being constructed next to the historic Boulevard Station that served as a Monon train station in the early 1900s and retaining the historic aesthetic was an important part of the project. This project included a 700’ long trail built on MSE walls and a 411’ long, 5-span pedestrian bridge where the center span is a prefabricated truss bridge and the exterior 4 spans are constructed of side-by-side box beams.

For this project, Beaty Construction self-performed all excavation, deep foundations, bridge substructure, bridge superstructure, and MSE wall work. We worked closely with the designer of record to construct stylistic features that are aimed to preserve the historic ambiance around the building, which includes a large decorative concrete sign, railroad inspired stamped concrete sidewalk, and the restoration of the boulevard station parking lot. The four bridge piers sit on drilled shafts and the pier stems include a decorative form liner to resemble the old railroad bridge styling.

Since many of the adjacent properties around this project are owned by the Indiana State Fairgrounds and regularly used for events, Beaty maintained a line of communication to coordinate with the property owner’s event schedules while also achieving steady and seamless construction progress

Beaty Construction was the sub-contractor for the prefabricated truss bridge over I-69 on INDOT contract R-36921 – SR32 over I-69.  This project included constructing 2 MSE walls at each bridge end bent. The MSE walls contained an inlaid logo for the town of Pendleton, creating a town sign for the interstate exit. The pedestrian truss bridge is a 201’-11” clear span bridge over I-69. Beaty worked in tandem with the bridge supplier, who constructed the pedestrian bridge in Alabama and shipped the bridge in 4 separate pieces to the project site. The bridge design required the use of vinyl coated fencing on the sides of the truss, therefore restricting access onto the bridge from each end. Beaty developed custom equipment and finishing tools to operate on a railing system to allow for the concrete deck to be installed.

In addition to the construction, we worked closely with a local engineering firm to develop a streamlined construction approach that would result in minimal disruption to traffic while reducing overall costs for the project. We identified the existing vehicular bridge over I-69 (SR32 bridge) to be used as the place for the new pedestrian truss bridge to be unloaded and pre-assembled. Once fully assembled, the pedestrian truss was set on the newly constructed end bents, and the concrete bridge deck and pedestrian handrail were installed.

2,500 SF of MSE Walls

This 500’ long trail provided a scenic pedestrian pathway in Downtown Noblesville along the White River.  The trail was comprised of a section of concrete sidewalk with architectural walls and a section of timber boardwalk on metal piling.

The original design was not well suited for the location of the project or the access to the work.  We used our experience with MSE walls and driven piles to value engineer cheaper and more effective designs for both the concrete and boardwalk sections of the project.  The end result was a high quality product at a savings of approximately $40,000 to the owner.
